Nationwide Student crises looms

There is a looming crisis, a festering storm, which, if left unchecked, may soon engulf the nation in a most horrendous way unimaginable. And to make matters worse, authorities are looking the other way. There is an imminent and impending danger dangling on the nation, sparked by unpopular decisions by various education stakeholders.

If feelers reaching Genexx is anything to go by, the seeming pockets of crisis and disturbances in our various ivory towers, is threatening to burst on their seams. From OAU to LAUTECH; ABU to UniAbuja, the storm seems to be gaining momentum by the day.

While in OAU “efforts are being made to reverse the situation (of crisis) and put all those crisis behind it, so OAU can remain a clear leader in the whole of Africa”, according to Dr. Adeniran Adekanmi of the Department of Public Administration, OAU, the same cannot be said of other universities and polytechnics in the country.

The unpopular decisions of the various institutions of higher learning, especially the wave of increase in tuition fees, have sparked students’ protests and now, the whole body of students in Nigeria and other interest parties are spoiling for a showdown.

Just as OAU is trying to come out of its doldrums over the detention of Akinsola Saburi, student union leader at the institution, Ladoke Akintola University of Technology (LAUTECH), Ogbomosho, is now the hotbed of students’ crisis. The students protested against what they called “unlawful and arbitrary increase in school fees” by the institution’s authorities. Led by Mr. Aborisade Samson, the students staged demonstration in Oshogbo, Osun State capital, to protest against the decision of the university management. The students’ union leader, Aborisade, who led over 300 students of the University to the Corporate Office of Osun State Broadcasting Corporation, (OSBC), and the Nigeria Television Authority (NTA), in Oshogbo, described the decision of the university management as an administrative error and an act of selfishness.
